Entrepreneurship : The idea is important, yes, but execution is what matters.

A lot of people think that you need to have an incredible idea if you want to create a company.

A revolutionary idea will help you, of course, but it’s not absolutely necessary. While the idea is important, what really matters is the execution. Having an idea is one thing. A lot of us have fantastic ideas for new businesses. Spend an evening with two or three close friends in a nice place, with nice food and some drinks and you will find that you will have at least a dozen fantastic ideas.

Well, that’s the easy part.

The tough part begins when the time comes to execute your idea, when you transform your idea into a concrete company, when this new and fragile company becomes firmly established. What matters is how you transform your idea into a real business; what are the choices you make in the face of difficulties, how you adapt you business model in order to respond to your market, how you recruit and build an A-team.

If you give the same idea to two different teams, after six months you will have two different companies. The management teams won’t have the same vision of the market or market strategy to become a leader. The idea is important, yes, but execution is what matters. Let’s say it another way: Do you think Apple would have been the same company if Steve Jobs and his team didn’t run it? We could ask the same question regarding Amazon with Jeff Bezos, Google with Larry Page and Sergei Brin…

If you want to start your own company don’t spend too much time looking for the perfect idea. Find an idea you love, a business with potential, and then focus your energy on the execution: What is your mission? Who are your customers? Why will they buy your product? Who are your competitors? What differentiates your product from theirs? How will you communicate?

This is what really matters. This is execution.
